Equine Physiotherapy
What Is Equine Physiotherapy
Equine Physiotherapy provides a clinically informed approach to maintaining and restoring your horse's movement, comfort and performance. Treatment focuses on identifying areas of dysfunction and imbalance, reducing discomfort and tension to improve posture, flexibility and range of motion restoring strength and correct movement and optimizing musculoskeletal health.
What to Expect From a Session
Each session will begin with a static assessment, where your horses posture, weight distribution and muscular balance will be observed. A gait analysis can consist of a walk/trot up in a straight line, but may also involve lunging or ridden assessments if deemed appropriate. Palpation with joint range of motion evaluated will be performed, followed by appropriate and personalized treatment and home exercise plans. Treatment will involve manual therapy/Massage, joint mobilizations and may include electrotherapy usage to compliment the manual therapies, and prolong treatment effects.
As a physiotherapist a collaborative effort is made with other equine professionals alongside your vet to achieve the best results for your horse, including communication with Saddle Fitters, Farrier, Dentists, Osteopaths, Chiros, Nutritionists, Bowen therapists etc.

Maintenance
Optimising equal strength, stability and mobility to prevent injury occurrence as well as enhance performance, and spot any changes at the earliest stage. This is suited to:
-
Sports Horses
-
Pleasure Horses
-
Childrens Ponys/Pony club
-
Retirees

Soft Tissue/Tendon/Ligament Injuries
Physiotherapeutic treatments alongside electrotherapies can treat muscular/tendinous strains, and any compensations that arise due to this, reduce recovery time and the risk of reoccurrence. Examples Include:
-
SDFT/DDFT Tear
-
Suspensory Ligament injury
-
Collateral Ligament
-
Muscular Strains

Performance/Behavioural
Improving posture and ensuring musculoskeletal health , for a better performance of the activity required as well as maintaining a sound, happy horse. Reducing the instance of compensatory patterns by early intervention of imbalances/asymmetries. Examples of cases include:
-
Poor/reduced Performance
-
Changes in Behavior when tacking up/riding/handling
-
One sided/ Favorable rein
-
Paused Progression

Orthopaedic Conditions
Treatments focused on reducing pain, maintaining joint function and improving strength with tailored exercise plans for conditions such as:
-
OA/ Arthritis/ Degenerative joint Disease
-
Navicular
-
Meniscus injury
-
Sacro-iliac Dysfunction

Post Operative
Physiotherapeutic techniques and tailored exercise prescription to improve comfort and functionality after surgery, for example:
-
ODSP/Kissing Spine Surgery,
-
Colic surgery
-
OCD Arthroscopy
-
UFP/ Locking Stifle Surgery

Wound Management
A combination of manual and electrotherapy use to encourage healing of open wounds, to prevent infection, and prevent unwanted scar tissue development which may restrict movement. Examples:
-
Impalement/Lacerations/cuts
-
Deglove Injury
-
Sarcoid Removal
-
Post Hematoma
Our Services
Manual Therapy
Soft tissue massage, myofascial release, acupressure, cupping therapy, mobilizations and stretching all used to reduce discomfort, improve mobility, gait and posture and support healing, to create lasting results.
Remedial Exercise Plan
A personalized plan created after every session to support your animal between appointments, to improve posture and musculature recruitment, to increase muscle mass and create lasting support.
Class 3B & 4 LASER
LASER uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate tissue repair and reduce discomfort and inflammation. A non-invasive treatment which can accelerate healing, improve circulation and support recovery.
PEME/PEMF
This electrotherapy uses pulsed electromagnetic fields to stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation and discomfort, which in turn increases circulation and supports healing of a variety of conditions.
Therapeutic Ultrasound
Ultrasound utilizes sound waves to deliver deep heat to tissue, increasing circulation and promote healing. Particularly useful in chronic soft tissue injuries' and scar tissue reduction.
TENS/NMES
TENS acts on the pain gate mechanism to work as a non-invasive pain relief, and aids in relaxation. NMES can be used to stimulate muscle contraction to improve strength and recovery.
