Small Animal Hydrotherapy

What is Hydrotherapy ?

Hydrotherapy uses sanitized water, heated to a therapeutic temperature to assist in gait re-education, muscle building, weight bearing and aids in reducing discomfort using the properties of water...

Buoyancy
Water reduces the effects of gravity, meaning your dog carries less body weight. This relieves pressure on joints and allows easier, more comfortable movement, particularly for those with reduced mobility, musculature or weakness.

Resistance
Water provides natural resistance in all directions. This helps to gently strengthen muscles, improve joint stability, and build overall fitness without the need for high-impact exercise.

Hydrostatic Pressure
The pressure exerted by water can help reduce swelling and improve circulation. This supports healing, decreases inflammation, and can aid in pain reduction.

Viscosity
Water slows movement, encouraging controlled and deliberate motion. This helps improve coordination, balance, and correct movement patterns during rehabilitation.

Together, these properties make hydrotherapy a safe, controlled, and highly effective treatment for a wide range of conditions.

What is included in your Hydrotherapy Session?

  • A full session in the underwater treadmill or hydrotherapy pool with a qualified veterinary physiotherapist

  • Massage, stretching, mobilizations, conditioning exercises during the session

  • A bath and towel/blow dry post session

  • Vet reports to show plans and progression, with muscle symmetry and measurements taken.

Commonly Treated Conditions:

Any dog which is currently being seen by a vet for an injury/condition will require a veterinary referral form to be completed before booking an an appointment. This can be completed

The buoyancy of water reduces strain on injured/healing tissues, allowing safe, controlled exercise to support recovery and muscle building and to encourage equal weight bearing. Hydrotherapy is often used after procedures such as:

  • Cruciate repair/TPLO

  • Fractures

  • Hip replacements

  • Amputations? Arthrodesis

Maintenance/Performance/Weight Loss

Hydrotherapy is an excellent conditioning tool for active and working dogs, building strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness while minimizing impact on joints. The natural resistance of water also increases energy expenditure, supporting healthy weight loss. Examples include:

  • Working Sheep/gun dogs

  • Sporting/Agility/Flyball/obedience

  • Active and Pet dogs

  • Overweight dogs/ Limited Mobility

Orthopaedic Conditions

Treatments focused on reducing pain, restoring joint function and improving strength with tailored exercise plans for conditions such as:

  • Hip/Elbow dysplasia

  • Patella Luxation

  • Osteoarthritis/Arthritis

  • Spondylosis

  • Degenerative Joint Disease

Neurological

Dogs with neurological conditions such as IVDD, DM etc often benefit from the supportive properties of water which can improve coordination, encourage correct movement patterns, and maintain muscle tone, even when mobility on land is limited. Examples Include:

  • Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

  • Fibrocartilagenous embolism (FCE)

  • Degenerative Myelopathy

  • Wobblers

  • Spinal Cord Trauma

Soft Tissue Injuries

For strains, sprains, and muscle injuries, hydrotherapy provides gentle resistance and buoyancy to rebuild strength without overloading the affected area. It promotes circulation, improves range of motion, and supports a gradual return to normal activity. For conditions such as:

  • Tendon Ruptures/Tears

  • Ligament Injuries/tears

  • Muscular strains/asymetries

Senior Management

Water reduces pressure on uncomfortable joints while allowing dogs to stay active. Regular hydrotherapy can help improve joint range of motion, reduce discomfort, and maintain muscle strength, supporting a better quality of life for arthritic dogs. Cases include:

  • Arthritis

  • Muscle Loss

  • Reduced Mobility
